Corona Chronicles 2: (Ep.46) The Cloud and The Voice

Various speakers, Mark 9:2 - 9:7, 7 October 2020

Ben and Dean look at the Transfiguration - one of the most famous parts of the New Testament - where God speaks and declares who Jesus is to three of the disciples.
Mark 9:2-7

Mark 9:2 - 9:7

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.”

Welcome back to corona chronicles. We are We're just going into mark chapter 9 now, the transfigurations. This is a fantastic story. Yeah. We're gonna do it in 2 halves.

So 1 up a mountain, 1 down a mountain. Here we go. After after 6 days, Jesus took Peter. James and John with him and led him up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There, he was transfigured before them.

His clothes became dazzling white whiter than anyone in the world could please them. And they and there appeared before them, Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up 3 shelters, 1 for you, 1 for Moses, and 1 for Elijah. He did not know what to say.

They were so frightened. They had a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud. This is my son whom I love. Listen to him. What?

Yeah. This is the fantastic stuff isn't Yeah. It's brilliant. Poor up here. No.

He he'd fair play to him. He he's always the 1 who stands up say something. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Most of the time it's garbage. But at least he's a good guy. I just I mean, what what we, you know, it's good to remember that Mark -- Yeah. -- Mark's big source -- Yeah.

-- for his material was probably Peter. Yeah. Right? And so it's kind of like it's it's good that it's like, oh, I remember them. I remember the mountain.

There was Well, I have no idea what I was on about. And that changed to John were like, oh, Peter, don't forget these things out of here. Yeah. Yeah. A little parenthesis there, you know, who who did not know what say, you know.

But it it is an incredible stuff. You know, it's an incredible event, isn't it? The transfiguration, it goes up. Jesus takes these these are 3 these sort of 3 chief apostles, and and they see something incredible. Yeah.

I mean, the mountain is the place where in in in scriptural language and pictures. It's it's where God where you go to meet God. So Moses goes up the mountain to get the 10 commandments and all of this stuff. And and God is so it's the place where you meet God. So Jesus going up there is symbol You know, he's trying to show I'm God.

And we see we see that here in some way, don't we because he's transfigured. Yeah. And his clothes become dazzling white -- Yeah. -- like, whiter than anyone in the world can bleached. Yeah.

Yeah. Bang. Damn. Damn. Damn.

Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. And I think, you know, that it's just a little glimpse of Jesus' glory. And how how veiled he was -- Yeah.

-- to the world. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They just look like a normal bloke.

Yeah. And and for any du any for any juice sort of reading verse 4, again, and there appeared before them Elijah and Moses. Yeah. It's like, well, we are giving our, you know, not not that Jesus necessarily need it, but Here's here is our stamp. Yeah.

Yeah. It it it we've got 2 witnesses. Yep. Alright. Which is, you know, any any sort of -- Right.

Testimony to be believed -- Yeah. -- 2 witnesses. And here come not just too many 2 witnesses, but, you know, the law and the prophets, you know. Yep. All of the all of the all of the old testament -- Yeah.

-- is is, you know -- Yeah. -- sort of bow into Jesus. So I'm saying, yep. Yeah. Is what we're all about.

The Loom's gospel, it it kind of expands on what they're talking about. Here, I think it's just as they're talking with Jesus. But Loom's gospel, we see that they were talking with Jesus about his departure, which is his death, his resurrection. So the the the law of the prophets, as you say, are talking with Jesus or in agreement with Jesus about his debt. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So and, you know, when Jesus is risen from the grave and he's he starts with the the law and the prophets. Isn't he?

And explains through scripture how all of it's about him. This is exactly what's going on here. Moses and Lydra alike, it's all about you and your departure. Yeah. Of course.

Yeah. And then and then and then that's when sort of geez. That's when Peter does sort of pipe up. And and, you know, he's he's always thinking like, oh, mate. I'll just join the best club in the world.

Yeah. Yeah. How do I get here? Yeah. And he's, you know, wanting to build some showers and, you know, maybe thinking, like, this is this is a great place to live.

You know, I could settle down here. Yeah. You know? Yeah. Yeah.

But you know. Yeah. That's nice, not what it's about. Is it? You know, he doesn't understand what he's talking about.

But I think that's why it's really interesting. When when this cloud appears and the cloud is that is like the interface or it's -- Yeah. -- cloud represents god's presence in in the world. Yeah. And this cloud appears and covers them, and a voice comes from the clouds.

So this is the father speaking. This is my son, whom I love. Yeah. Listen to hear And you'll get you're seeing this picture and you'll go, oh, we need to build some stuff. We need to build some and God said, listen like he he's bought his work and it's just Yeah.

Yeah. To be fair, like, I feel like, you know, Peter is he's he is He's he's our he's our representative. Absolutely. Yeah. You know, because -- You would be the same.

-- corona chronicles, you know, half the time I'm feeling like Peter, what I wanna know about. Yeah. You know, it's it is he's sort of the full guy. He's the 1 that's there for us. He's the 1 that that God says it to first.

Right. But he God says it to everyone. Are you listening to Jesus? That is the big point of this story. Look at look at what happened to him.

Look at who he is, and are you listening to him? Yeah. You know? Definitely. Yeah.

Yeah. So so listen to g listen to Jesus. Yeah. Have you heard this actually what he said? Yeah.

A lot of people are like, oh, I follow Jesus. I believe Jesus really. You know, if you heard what he said -- Yeah. -- about you, about him. Really listen to it.

Really listen to him. Yeah.
