Corona Chronicles 2: (Ep.41) Show us a Sign

Various speakers, Mark 8:11 - 8:13, 25 September 2020

Today Pete and Dean look at how Jesus responds when the Pharisees ask him for yet another sign. It's not hard to see why Jesus was so frustrated!
Mark 8:11-13

Mark 8:11 - 8:13

11 The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 And he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.

Welcome back to another corona chronicle. Jesus has just fed 4000 gentiles. The disciples asked the question, how are we gonna get enough food even though Jesus is not long before fed 5000 people with the same miracle. And it could possibly have been because they didn't expect God to to pour his blessings out on the gentiles as well. And here, Jesus is still in this gentile land, but the pharisees have come after him.

They've come to follow him. They've come to chase him. Perhaps, they've chased him into this territory because they likewise are upset that he's preaching and performing miracles for the for the gentile. We're not a hundred percent sure, but It's just verse 11 to verse 13 of chapter 8 in in booker Mark. The pharisees came and began to question Jesus to test him They asked him for a sign from heaven.

He signed deeply and said, why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly, I tell you, no sign will be given to it. Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side. I mean, it really, really is extraordinary, isn't it? And You hear are these religious Jews, and it seems that the gentiles are getting the truth, but the religious readers of the Scripture don't seem to be getting and they're asking for a sign.

I mean, what other sign could you have? He's just fed 4000 people with a few fish savages. With left overs. And then there's tons of left overs left over from the left overs. Yeah.

It's a bit I always think it's like this. I imagine it like this. I'm walking down the road, penrose road. Yeah. And someone drives up and pulls up in the car and say, can you show me a sign to London?

Can you tell me the way to London? And I say to the bloke, yeah, you just go up there, you go over the traffic light, you go over another set of traffic lights. You've come to toll with roundabout, and there'll be a little white sign, and it will say London. Yeah? And he says, thank you, and he goes off.

And then you imagine half an hour later, the same car pulls up. Yeah? And he said, look, I wanna get to London. Did you see the sign? I didn't like that sign.

I want a green sign, not 1 of the white signs, a more important green site. Oh, yeah. It says, okay. We need to do this blah blah blah blah blah. You'll see a a 3 green site go to London.

Half an hour later, he pulls up again, and he says, I wanna get to London. He said, no, you don't. He said, look, I need a blue motorway sign. You know, and you would say, I'm not telling you, because you don't I've showed you signs, and you really don't want to get to London. It's a pretense.

Jesus has done, miracle after miracle, and they say, show us a sign. I know. It's incredible. And you you sense Jesus frustration and his disappointment, you know, his size deeply. It's just he's he's it's interesting because he says, truly I tell you no site will be given to it.

Although sites have been given. But it's obviously Look, you're so you're so hard hearted. You won't believe. You won't believe. So there's no sign I could possibly give you.

I'm even gonna rise from the from the dead and you won't believe me. No. So what so so there's no sign and it's Yeah. But atheists are like this, aren't I? I mean, to be honest, it's all the time show us a sign sort of thing.

And you say, okay, well, where's the world come from? There's creation isn't there. There's art, but you're saying no artist. And they said, no, no, that's not a sign. I'm not gonna believe that.

And then you say, okay, we'll come to church and see people loving, you know, people from different background. Oh, no. I don't believe that. And I've been talking about the rainbow recently, because that is a sign that got put in the sky. Oh, no.

We know how you know, the reflection of the light, what will you believe? With the scriptures. No. No. They're old.

Faction. You just think of the work. Okay. Fine. Yeah.

And it's funny because in their scriptures, they they would they would talk about Moses and about manna from heaven. You know, brought down by God to figures people. So they would hold on to that. I think in another gospel, Jesus says, you don't even believe you're own the prophet. Don't even believe Moses's words.

Yeah. Because if you did, you would recognize that I was the 1 who provided the manor in the wilderness for the is realized. I'm the 1 who's provided bread for these people here. Yeah. And even this, in itself, you know, Here are eyewitness accounts.

This gospel is Mark's gospel. You know, they're witness accounts to Jesus. That, here's the sign. Read about Jesus. Oh, I'm not reading that word.

I'm not gonna look at that sign here. You know, it's just a constant, no, and I get that. I get something of the sigh of Jesus. It's like, What what do you want? And there is nothing I could do, you know, because you won't listen, you'll always say it was a cup ring trick or -- Yeah.

-- you know, he did it by Beelzebub or he, you know, it'd be something like that. And there's quite a damning or a warning really in verse 13 because then he left them. Yeah. And then Jesus isn't going to waste his time on people who have hardened their heart against him. Yeah.

He he gives he he speaks and he he displays his power. But if you aren't gonna engage with him seriously, Yeah. Which these pharisees are not. How can you say showing his sign off the way he's just dead? Yeah.

Then Jesus will just He'll leave he'll leave them. Yeah. So we think there are plenty of signs for you to believe in the lord Jesus Christ. And not least, his death and his resurrection. And, you know, if you're really want to look at the site, then look into the resurrection of Jesus.

Have a look at it, historically, ask questions, and you'll see that here is a man, who died under Roman soldiers, and rose again on the third day, a fact of history. It shows that Jesus is the son of the living God. And that we need to bow to him and make him our audience over here. See you next time.
