Mark 2:23-28

Mark 2:23 - 2:28

23 One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26 how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” 27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

Welcome back to the corona chronicles. We're thinking about who is Jesus. That's the question that's been asked in the beginning of, you know, the first couple chapters of of Mark's gospel. We had it a couple days ago, and we've got it again today. Who is Jesus, and and we're gonna see some curve balls about who he is.

So Dean's gonna read from verse 23. 1 Sabbath, Jesus was going through the cornfields. And as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some ears of corn. The pharisees said to him, look, why are they doing what is unlawful on Sabbath? He answered, have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

In the days of Avatar, the high priest. He entered the house of God and ate the consecrated brick which is lawful only for priests to eat and he also gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. So the son of man is lord even of the sabbath. I'm just That's an unbelievable statement about it.

Yeah. I can't I just can't, you know, I love to imagine what they must have been what their faces there's I don't know about you. I love I love memes. And when I read that, a meme popped into my head, and it was the 1 it's the 1 of Kevin Hart. And he's got a look on his face that's like that, and it's like, wait, what?

You know, it's 1 of those moments that it's another massive double take. These Farisees, they, you know, they're coming to Jesus, they're moaning about his again, about his disciples, about what then, not doing. Yeah. And then, you know, Jesus doesn't just answer them with an unbelievable answer. Yeah.

He he blows their pre you know, sort of what they think of him just blows it out of the water -- Yeah. -- unbelievable. Yeah. It's unbelievable. Yeah.

And he's been he's been gathering attention, Jukas, because he's not the normal rabbi, is it? No. No. It's not just a good teacher like I said yesterday. Exactly.

Yeah. It's not just a good teacher. So what mean, like, what are the what are these Farishes doing in the cornfields? They must be like following him or -- Yeah. -- keeping track they're keeping tabs on him.

Yeah. And very soon, we start to see them. Actually actively going out to find him. But they're they're sort of there's something completely different about Jesus. He doesn't he doesn't blend in as we said last time.

With other good teachers. There's something different about him. No. That's right. They're they're they're sort of they they've got little tick list, you know.

He's -- Yeah. He's breaking the rules of the of the south, you know, yeah. But but what you've what you've got to know is that the pharisees have they've added to the to the laws. Mhmm. This is not an old testament law.

It's it's it's it's added by the pharisees. During this time and and Jesus says to them, look, I'm not about your little rules. I'm not about your little religiosity. Yeah. You know, I've I've come to I've come so that people can reconnect with God.

Mhmm. Your little laws, not yours, but, you know, pharisees. Yeah. Your your little laws, they they stop people reconnecting with God. Yeah.

Savath was all about, look, 6 days work, 1 day rest, reconnect with God, and you know, you do it at your slaves, you know, your slaves and servants and you even your donkeys, get a rest, you know. Reconnect with God. Enjoy god. You know? And and the pharisees are all about, you know, putting burdens on people, you know.

And again, Jesus just says, no, no, no, it's not about that. Yeah. I mean, the fact that they're out in this cornfield accusing, like watching, looking, waiting for Jesus to do something wrong. They aren't even really observing the sabbath as it was meant to be. Yeah.

Yeah. Is that them connecting with God? No. That's them trying to be like a stickler for the rules and They love the rules that they made. They love having the power over people.

Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you know, like, Jesus, he he's not again, he's he's not here saying the 10 commandments don't matter. The law of God doesn't matter. You know, he's he's not come to abolish the law, but he's come to fulfill it.

But then and then he goes. Look, it goes on to say, I mean, he compares himself to David first which must have been again like That's a weird 1. That's bad enough for the flourishes to hear. Yeah. But then he said, he goes he goes even further.

And says, you know, that the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath. So the son of man is lord even of this of the sabbath. First, he says, I'm the son of man. Second, he says, is Lord, you know? He's referring to himself in these 2 by these these 2 descriptions.

Yeah. And that must have been an absolute bombshell -- Yeah. -- for the pharisees. Even his disciples would have would have, like, stopped chewing on their little ears of corn at that moment. You know?

Well, I he said like a succession of things because he could go back to the David thing. I mean, that, I mean, is an amazing thing too because David's their great king. Yeah. Here, you know, and they hold him up to be the 1 who is, you know, the embodiment of of the law and everything. And then, you know, Jesus is saying, haven't you you know, isn't this amazing, which is system?

Have you never rated a rated Yeah. It's so they would have moved backwards. I know. So he's sort of saying to them you you've kind of missed the point completely because look, what I'm doing, David did a very similar thing. Yeah.

And he gave some to his paniards. And would you have dared said to David, you're breaking the law? Yeah. You wouldn't have. No.

No. No. So first of all, your Hippigrates. Second of all, you misunderstood the misunderstood the word of God and then thirdly this bombshell about this this lord of the sun. I mean, we're gonna get back to what, you know, son of man, what that all about.

But but, you know, just just as it's here, this is a a wait. What? Yeah. Moment that's definitely worth looking into, you know. So yeah.

It's great. Yep. See you next time.
